Super Saturday 2013

Super Saturday is here again! This year it will be Saturday, September 14th from 10am-2pm at the stake center 4000 Nazarene Rd in Carrollton. If you don't want to do crafts we will also have a service project that you can work on. If you have old crafts that need to be finished bring those too! We'd love to have you just come hang out and chat. Feel free to bring a treat to share if you'd like. Hope to see you there!

Here's this years crafty line up:

Reversible flannel/whiteboard and three Bible stories $15

Estimated time 1 hour

*The stories will be laminated and ready for you to cut out. They will include Jonah and the Whale, The Creation, and The Nativity. This is perfect for Family Home Evening or just when you need to keep your littles occupied.

Behold Him Blocks $12

Estimated time 30-45 minutes
*There is minimal sanding and no painting for these blocks. The letters are vinyl and the paper and picture are mod podged. There will also be some small Christmas Flowers to choose from if you would like to add a little more color.

Give Thanks Blocks $6
Estimated time 20-30 minutes
*No mod podging on this one! Pick your paint colors, sand the edges and apply the vinyl letters. Finish it off with a bow and you're done. This one is quick and easy!

Halloween Candle Sticks $14
Estimated time 15-20 minutes
*This is another cute and easy decoration. This will include a small battery operated candle so no need to worry about a mess with wax.

If you have a project you're working on, bring it and work on it with us. Or just come and enjoy some yummy snacks and fun conversation! Also this would be a great opportunity to invite friends and family to get to know the sisters in our ward family!

*Because of drying times we will have these already painted with the chalkboard paint. We will have book pages, paper and fabric scraps for you to make flowers to decorate it with.*

*If you have sensitive ears you might want to purchase sterling silver earring posts. These can be found at Hobby Lobby, JoAnn's, or Michaels.*

Family block     $4.00

estimated time: 15-25 minutes

*this block allows for a 5x7 picture and decoration on the end, I will have copies of the proclamation available, or you can bring any 4x6 or 5x7 picture you'd like to use.* 

Memo/ Bow holder Frame      $4.00

estimated time: 10-25 minutes

*You will have to provide your own frame. Anything larger than an 8x10 should work. Be sure to check thrift stores, the dollar store, or use coupons at a craft store to keep it affordable. We will provide the twine, and 15 1" clothes pins. We will have fabric scraps available for you to use, or you can bring your own if you have a specific color scheme in mind. The time on this craft will vary depending on how many flowers you put on.*

September 13, 2011 -- Relief Society Meeting

Tonight we learned how to make lovely cupcakes.

We also had a good time visiting with each other.

And learning some fun facts about some fun sisters!

Did you know that one of our sisters once lost her wig?

We learned some parenting tips from them, too.

We learned about their greatest accomplishments,
and how they met their husbands.

Welcome, you new Sisters! We are anxious to get to know you better.

There was a full house tonight....

The Carrollton First Ward Relief Society rocks!

Definitely one of our "sweeter" Relief Society Meetings!

The decorations were pretty.

Fun was had by all.

We played a game unwrapping candy bars with pot holders, a knife, and fork.

It was kind of a crazy game ..... but sweet!

We had yummy ice cream for refreshments.

Thank you, Relief Society Presidency!
We appreciate all of the effort you put in to making this an uplifting activity.

I didn't know we were all so talented.

It was an awesome evening.

These ladies were at my table and I can personally attest to the fact
that they are superior with oven mitts and utensils. :)

Even if they did come in at least 2nd place in that silly game!

Gospel ABC/123 book

Stephanie Blake was kind enough to share a fun craft! The only catch is I need everyone's money in by THIS Sunday. I found a pretty good deal on photos so each book will only be $5 but the coupon expires Monday so If I don't have your money by Sunday night I won't be able to include you in the order on Monday.

April's craft night

Please don't feel like you're limited to this specific project. If you'd rather make blocks that say home, or family or even names for your kids that's fine, feel free to get creative! I'll be able to cut the letters for you that night. I'll only have these papers on hand though, so if you want different colors you'll need to get those yourself. If you need more than six blocks please email or call me and I can let you know what the price difference will be. All money is due by March 31st. The sign up sheets will go around one more time this Sunday so if you miss it please call or email me.

Christmas Countdown Blocks Instructions

Christmas Countdown Blocks

Prepare your blocks:

1.      Sand each of your blocks until smooth. You can round the corners if you prefer.

2.      Paint each of the blocks with as many coats as needed to get the color you desire. Allow to dry completely.

3.      If you want a distressed edge you need to do that now. Once the mod podge is on you won’t be able to. You distress your blocks by sanding some of the paint off the corners and edges roughly.

Mod podge the paper squares:

1.        *optional* Before you begin applying the paper you can choose to ink the edges to give them a more dimensional look. If you’ve never done this before practice on some scrap paper before you try it on your paper squares.

2.      Paint a coat of mod podge on one side and allow it to dry for a few seconds to make it tacky. Smooth the paper square on by rubbing from the center to the edges. Make sure you remove any air bubbles and the paper is completely adhered or it will cause rippling in the paper later. Do this for each side, one at a time, until all the paper squares have been applied.

Mod podge the numbers:

1.        Apply the numbers in the same way.

·        Block #1 should have the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

·        Block #2 should have the numbers 0, 1, 2, 6, 7, 8. The 6 will double as a 9.

2.      I would suggest that you set out the numbers for one block at a time. It’s really easy to get them mixed up, and really hard to get them back off!

Finishing up:

1.        Apply the ‘Christmas Countdown’ to your base the same way you did the paper squares. Even though you’re only putting paper on the front I would suggest you mod podge the whole block. It will give it a shiny finish and it won’t look even if you don’t do the whole thing.

4.     After everything is applied, and thoroughly dry, apply one or two more coats of mod podge to seal it. You need to allow these to dry at least overnight before stacking them or they may stick together.

October Craft Club

Homemade Playdough

This is actually Melissa Whitley posting this recipe. However, I use this recipe from my mom to make playdough that all the kids in my sunbeam class love to play with. It's an easy recipe that literally takes minutes to make. The playdough will last a long time, especially if you put it in the fridge between uses! :)

Homemade Playdough

1 cup flour
1 tablespoon oil
1 cup water (food color added)
1/2 cup salt
2 teaspoons cream of tarter

*Heat over medium heat until mixture sticks together and forms a ball. It's ready to play with!

(Note: Cream of tarter is not absolutely necessary - it is a preservative, so it lasts longer when you use it.)

Craft Fair for Francis

Hi Ladies! Most of you know that my sister Francis was diagnosed with a brain tumor last October and had brain surgery in November 2009. She is doing amazing now but of course has gigantic medical bills that will just keep growing. :( This is the type of tumor that she will have to watch for to grow back her whole life and she has a lot of physical therapy to do. So, we are having a craft fair to benefit her! 100% of the proceeds will go towards her medical bills! Here are the details......

Easter Story Cookies

Here's the recipe for the cookies we shared in our Easter Eggs at the Primary Activity. It's our family's favorite tradition for now ; )

Ingredients:
1 cup whole pecans
1 tsp vinegar
3 egg whites
pinch of salt
1 cup sugar
1 zipper baggie
1 wooden spoon
masking tape
Bible

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 300 F.
2. Place pecans in a zipper baggie and let children beat them with a wooden spoon to break them into small pieces (leave in bag until the last--used as last ingredient).
**Explain that after Jesus' arrest, he was beaten by Roman soldiers. READ John 19:1-3.
3. Let each child smell the vinegar. Pour 1 tsp vinegar into the mixing bowl.
**Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross he was given vinegar to drink. READ John 19:28-30.
4. Add egg whites to vinegar.
**Tell the children that eggs represent life.
**Explai that Jesus gave his life so that we could be resurrected and have eternal life. READ John 10:10-11.
5. Sprinkle a little salt into each child's hand. Let them taste it and brush the rest into the bowl.
**Explain that this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus' followers during the crucifixion. READ Luke 23:27.
Ask your children if any of the ingredients used to this point seem very appetizing.
6. Add 1 cup of sugar.
**Explain that the sweetest part of the Easter story is that Jesus died because he loves us, He wants us to know and belong to him and be able to return to the Father. READ Psalm 34:8. Read John 3:16.
7. Beat with mixer on high speed for 12-15 minutes, until stiff peaks are formed.
**Explain that the color white represents the purity in God's eyes of those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus. READ Isaiah 1:18.
8. Fold in the broken nuts. Drop the dough by teaspoons onto a cookie sheet covered with wax paper.
**Explain that each mound of dough represents the rocky tomb where Jesus' body was laid. Read Matthew 27:57-60.
9. Put the cookie sheet into the oven, close the door and turn the oven OFF. Give each child a piece of tape and help them seal the oven door.
**Explain that Jesus' tomb was sealed. Read Matthew 27:65-66.
10. Go to bed! Or proceed with the events of the night and leave the cookies in the oven until morning.
**Explain that the children might feel sad to leave the cookies in the oven overnight. Jesus followers despaired when the tomb was sealed. Read John 16:20,22.
11. Before the children are up the next morning, remove the tape and open the oven door. After the children awaken, gather them in the kitchen and give everyone a cookie. Tell them to notice how the surface is cracked and to take a bite. The cookies will be hollow.
**Explain that on the first Easter Jesus' followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty. When they understood what it meant, they rejoiced! Read John 11:25-26.

Old Books

Moons LDS Bookstore has a shipment of used books for sale..... cheap.

I was there this afternoon and got quite a few good books for $1, $1.50, $2.00. Among them was the biography of Howard W. Hunter ($4.) and other good books. The woman told me that they got the books from DI. She said DI had so many that they were going to just get rid of them.

So, if there are any bargain hunters in the ward. Have fun!

Empty Nesters

Is YOUR nest empty? If so, you are invited to come to our empty nester activities. These are sponsored by no one and endorsed by no one. We are just a bunch of friends who decided to get together and have a little fun. All empty nesters are invited!

Last night's activity was a "birthday party." We ate dinner, ate birthday cake, and celebrated the fact that we are alive. Afterwards we played some games. We learned some new things about each other. Cheri wishes she could spend 1 million $ in one day. Mike W. wishes he could own a Harley. Beckie wishes she could dance salsa. David wishes he could speak Spanish fluently. Joe wants to ride a motorcycle, Debi W. wants to run her own company. Debbie C. wishes she could travel the world. Richard and Mike C. wish they could retire, while Beth just wishes she could go on a cruise. Sue says she would simply love to go skydiving!

Want to know what they would NEVER EVER do? We made some lists. Beth says she would never shoplift anything. Cheri will never climb a mountain. Richard will never parachute jump. Mike W. will never be a snake charmer and his wife Debi, will never pilot an airplane. Beckie would never want to rob a bank. David says no to eating caviar. Joe says he will never ever eat Shushi and Sue doesn't ever want to learn to speak Chinese. Mike C. does not want to be asked to be Scoutmaster and his wife, Debbie C. says she will never lie, cheat, or steal!

We laughed a lot and shared some interesting birthday memories. All too soon, the evening was over. If you have an empty nest, keep your ears open for details of the next activity. If you don't, see what you have to look forward to when your nest is empty? :)

This place is awesome!! If your wanting to remodel something and don't want to pay retail, this is the place to go! They demo all kinds of houses and get all the good stuff out beforehand and bring it back to their warehouse to sell for 30-90% off retail. This place is huge...so if you going to go...have a plan of what you want because you could literally spend hours just looking around saying...ooohhhhh, what if I...??? The website is cool, but going there and seeing all the stuff is WOW!!!

Whole Wheat Bread Recipe Recommended by Sue

(For 1 1/2 pound bread machine)

1 1/4 cups water
2 tablespoons olive or vegetable oil
1/4 cup honey or maple syrup
3 to 3 1/2 cups White Whole Wheat or Traditional Whole Wheat Flour
1/4 cup sunflower, sesame or flax seeds, or a combination (optional)
1 tablespoon vital wheat gluten
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 1/2 teaspoons instant yeast

Put all of the ingredients into the bread pan in the order listed. Program for basic white bread, and press Start.

Craft fair?

I was wondering if anyone knows of any local cities that do craft fairs? They were all over Utah and Ohio, but I can't seem to find any here! I've found a few that are the big professional kind, but I'm thinking a little smaller. I wanted to do a booth and see if I can't make so vacation money, heaven knows I need one! Anyway any info would be super helpful! Thanks ladies!
