Rats, smoke alarms, and chocolate in carpet

Dear ladies--
Just had an incident this morning and sounds like some of you have had some recent incidents as well....the rats are moving into the homes. If you have seen some signs of rat droppings or heard them scurrying around in the attic then take care of them now. This morning we had a small fire in our attic...I could definately smell smoke and two of our alarms upstairs went off (the other one was out of battery power...I'm ashamed to mention that). There was no explaination for it. The only thing that makes sense is that a rat must have eaten through a wire. We'll investigate to find out for sure tonight, but just be careful. So...watch out for those hungry rats and get them out and away quick!

One more exciting thing I learned this week....I heard you can put salt water on stains in your carpet, let it dry and then vacuum it up. Well, we had a whole glass of hot chocolate spill on our lovely typical white carpet. I was devestated, but chose to put the salt water to the test. I put in 3 teaspoons of salt to 1 cup of water, mixed it up good, then dabbed the spot on the carpet with the wet rag. I even rubbed it in deep and kind of on top. Well, later that day before it dried all the way (I probably should have waited to save our vacuum from now having to give it a thourough cleaning)...I vacuumed it up and voila! The huge chocolate spill was gone! Salt water...who knew!

Neighborhood Garage Sale

come check out our neighborhood garage sale along San Francisco road and the courts along it...I was going to put my address, but felt it better if not....you know where I live ; ) It will be this weekend (November 20-21st) and next weekend (November 27-28). If you have a few things you'd like to drop off and sell as well, please feel free to do so. I hope to see you there. Some of the neighbors have children that would like to sell some of their homemade items...for those of you that know Cheryl Walker, her boy Silas will be selling some homemade fudge the weekend of Nov. 27-28th. It should be fun.

Quilt of holes

I got this in an email from my grandma today and thought that I would share it.

As I faced my Maker at the last judgment, I knelt before the Lord along with all the other souls.Before each of us laid our lives like the squares of a quilt in many piles; an angel sat before each of us sewing our quilt squares together into a tapestry that is our life.But as my angel took each piece of cloth off the pile, I noticed how ragged and empty each of my squares was. They were filled with giant holes.

Each square was labeled with a part of my life that had been difficult, the challenges and temptations I was faced with in every day life. I saw hardships that I endured, which were the largest holes of all.I glanced around me. Nobody else had such squares. Other than a tiny hole here and there, the other tapestries were filled with rich color and the bright hues of worldly fortune. I gazed upon my own life and was disheartened.My angel was sewing the ragged pieces of cloth together, threadbare and empty, like binding air.

Finally the time came when each life was to be displayed, held up to the light, the scrutiny of truth. The others rose; each in turn, holding up their tapestries. So filled their lives had been My angel looked upon me,and nodded for me to rise.My gaze dropped to the ground in shame. I hadn't had all the earthly fortunes. I had love in my life, and laughter. But there had also been trials of illness, and wealth, and false accusations that took from me my world, as I knew it. I had to start over many times. I often struggled with the temptation to quit, only to somehow muster the strength to pick up and begin again. I spent many nights on my knees in prayer, asking for help and guidance in my life. I had often been held up to ridicule, which I endured painfully, each time offering it up to the Father in hopes that I would not melt within my skin beneath the judgmental gaze of those who unfairly judged me.

And now, I had to face the truth. My life was what it was, and I had to accept it for what it was.

I rose and slowly lifted the combined squares of my life to the light. An awe-filled gasp filled the air. I gazed around at the others who stared at me with wide eyes.

Then, I looked upon the tapestry before me. Light flooded the many holes, creating an image, the face of Christ. Then our Lord stood before me, with warmth and love in His eyes. He said, 'Every time you gave over your life to Me, it became My life, My hardships, and My struggles.

Each point of light in your life is when you stepped aside and let Me shine through, until there was more of Me than there was of you.'May all our quilts be threadbare and worn, allowing Christ to shine through!

I am wanting to get back to the basics of food (making more things from scratch and not so much processed foods) and do more of the Word of Wisdom's suggestions. Need some help ladies!

I have come across several projects that I would like to do the only problem is that I need a thrift store to do them! The DI may be what I miss most about Utah! What I needed to know is if any of you ladies know of a good thrift store(s) in the area? Even though we've lived here over a year now, I still feel totally lost on finding things around here! Good News Minute

I have not been to Relief Society since my new little grandbaby, Evan Gabriel Yorke, was born. I am here in Kentucky helping hold him, and I am having a wonderful time. Evan is the CUTEST and SWEETEST little baby!!! We are calling him "Evan from Heaven."

We are hoping to go up to Idaho this Christmas time to pick up Dan's mother, so she can stay in our home with us until April. We were wondering if there is anyone in the ward that would like to rent out their motorhome to us to make it easier to pick her up and bring her back with us.

Hey, here's an idea....how many times do we visit teach and not get to know our sisters of their favorite things? The idea just hit me to send out an email telling them about me and my favorites and then asking them to tell about them...we'll see how it goes!

Distracted driving

This video is from Utah and and reflects Utah laws, not sure what the laws here in Texas are. Feel free to edit this post if you know so that we can all be more informed. I sent this to my parents and asked them to watch it with my 17 & 19 year old sisters. I've never really thought much about talking on my phone, I'd never text, but talking's not a big deal, right? All he did was drift a tiny bit when he looked down and two people died! I don't think I'll be risking it again!

For anyone who is interested: the Highland Shores fall neighborhood garage sale is September 19th. Drive north on 35E to exit for FM407. Go west on 407 to Highland Village (drive or road not sure which) turn right(north). Drive all the way to the light and turn left in to the neighborhood. There should be signs/balloons all over to follow. You can search "highland shores home owners association" and I think their web site will come up if you want more details.

Be Nice to Spiders

The other night Melissa and I noticed this.
In the kitchen, high on the wall between the table and the kitchen sink,
there was a tiny spider web. It was so small, I didn't even notice it....
Until I found it had caught this wasp.
When I first noticed it, the wasp was still alive. It was moving, trying to get loose.
I thought to myself, "I will do a little science fair experiment here."
"I will leave the wasp right where it is."
It didn't get loose.
In fact, the next morning, it was either paralyzed or dead.
I left it there while I went to my job.
A little later, Melissa called to tell me that the spider had returned to the web.
It was eating the wasp! She said it looked kind of neat.
When I got home from work, it was gone.
I left it there again.
The next day I was able to catch the spider hard at work, eating his dinner.
I took this picture.
I know some people are afraid of spiders, but I'm not.
This spider is an inspiration to me.
Just imagine if someone said to this tiny spider,
"For dinner tonight you can eat an insect that moves a thousand miles an hour
and is 10 times your size."
Do you think the spider would have believed it?
Would he have thought, "I can't do that!" ?
Heavenly Father sometimes asks us to do things that seem insurmountable,
but he gives us all the tools and abilities we need to do His will.
All we have to do is recognize our inner strength and utilize the gifts he has given us.
Be Nice to Spiders (like the book says).
Take a lesson from them.
"If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain,
Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and

I have switched to Crest. You have to read the labels on everything.This past weekend I was at Kroger. I needed 60 W light bulbs and Bounce dryer sheets. I was in the light bulb aisle, and right next to the GE brand I normally buy was an off brand labeled, "Everyday Value. " I picked up both types of bulbs and compared the stats - they were the same except for the price. The GE bulbs were more money than the Everyday Value brand but the thing that surprised me the most was the fact that GE was made in MEXICO and the Everyday Value brand was made in - get ready for this - the USA in a company in Cleveland, Ohio .So throw out the myth that you cannot find products you use every day that are made right here.So on to another aisle - Bounce Dryer Sheets . . . yep, you guessed it, Bounce cost more money and is made in Canada . The Everyday Value brand was less money and MADE IN THE USA ! I did laundry yesterday and the dryer sheets performed just like the Bounce Free I have been using for years and at almost half the price!My challenge to you is to start reading the labels when you shop for everyday things and see what you can find that is made in the USA - the job you save may be your own or your neighbors!If you accept the challenge, pass this on to others in your address book so we can all start buying American, one light bulb at a time! (You can cut and paste and send the same thing to everyone) There is a work meeting tomorrow at 5:45 p.m. at city hall. You can sit in, but not add input at this meeting. But on Sept. 1, they will present the budget at the city council meeting. At this time you can speak for 3-5 minutes, if you desire.

Thomas Pool Closing For Good / Budget Cuts

The city wants to close the pool permanently to save costs. They have spent a lot of money renovating it in recent years, but the redesign was not well thought-out, resulting in a pool that was less fun than before. During the renovation they removed the diving boards. Nothing took their place for the whole first season. When people went to the pool there was nothing to do! Also, they did not renovate the bath house, which is kind of old and dirty looking. They have not promoted the pool and people have kind of forgotten about it. It is a great pool that has a lot of potential to become a moneymaker, if handled properly. I sent an e-mail to the city council, hopefully it will be forwarded to you by Gretchen. Please read it and send an e-mail to them too, if you agree with me. A brief note saying "Thomas pool is worth saving," will do. The city council really does listen to the citizens. There will be a work session budget meeting discussing this matter by the city council on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Anyone can come. E-mail them as soon as possible so they will have something to discuss. children's summer activities

School days are almost here! I am so not ready....I usually have all these plans and not enough time to finish them all. This year has been the first that most of them are getting done. Wanted to share, so you can get things done, too:
**1st week of the month, we focused on teaching cooking skills. We make all kinds of things. The children even got to make 2 breakfasts and 1 dinner. How nice!
**2nd week of the month, we focused on scrapbooking. We leave all the scrapbook material out on the table all week long and the children have fun cutting, pasting, and writing. Sure saves me!
**3rd week: we focused on sewing. We pulled out the sewing and serger machines and had fun sewing little projects from blankets to bags, to pillowcases, and hopefully some mending.
**4th week: we focused on building/painting. We built us some marshmallow shooter guns, worked on a better, more economical bunny cage, and such.
All throughout the summer we had an opportunity to go to Sister Johnson's home and learn how to crochette...it's been a lot of fun for all the older 3. All the older 4 have been taking piano lessons right from Mom. This has kept us busy and yet still have time to play with friends, and to be together.

Spanish help

How cool is that to find that your home teacher is willing to help you get better at learning a language. Thanks, Brother Hale! You and your wife are such a tremendous blessing! I am needing to learn spanish better and he's ready to serve...thanks to Lois who noticed it and passed it on to her husband!

Gluten Free at Walmart

The newly remodeled Walmart in Carrollton now has a Gluten Free Section!! They have already made rolls, bread, cookies, cereal, pretzels, etc. And lots of mixes. I couldn't believe my eyes when I stumbled upon this!! I of course immediately told Wendy Hairel but I thought I would let all of you know as well in case you have loved ones with Gluten issues. This makes life sooooo much easier. Bless your heart Walmart!!

Awesome Noodles

I saw these noodles on a TV show the other day and decided that I would try them. They are 40 calories for the whole bag!! I got mine at Market Street for $1.50 a bag. They might be other places too but I haven't looked yet. I made a "Lo Mein" sort of dish last night and they were soooo good with it. All you do is microwave them for 1 minute and then add them to whatever you are cooking. They come in Spagetti and Fettuccine noodles.

Wonder Hangers

Ok, I know ya'll are going to think I am crazy but I had to post this on here.

We have a VERY small closet and I still have my childhood dresser that doesn't hold alot of clothes but it does hold a lot of memories. So, I kept seeing the commercials for "Wonder Hanger" and thought they might work for our closet. Finally I gave in and ordered them. This was before I realized you can buy them at CVS and Walmart and basically anywhere.

So, I put them in my closet last night and I was sooooooo excited!! I have so much room now and I am totally going to buy more. Just wanted to pass this along!!

I need my haircutting scissors sharpened big time...I'm not willing to buy some new ones, because I'm sure there's a quick and easy way to sharpen them. I did some research on the web, but only got scissors that don't cut at all now. I need help : 0

Don't lick envelopes!

I got this email from Terrie Christian (Kathy Case's friend). The pictures didn't come through, but maybe that's just as well!!
Envelopes and Stamps
A woman was working in a post Office in California . One day she licked the envelopes and postage stamps instead of using a sponge.That very day the lady found a cut on her tongue. A week later, she noticed an abnormal swelling of her tongue. She went to the doctor, and they found nothing wrong.. Her tongue was not sore or anything.. A couple of days later, her tongue started to swell more, and it began to get really sore, so sore, that she could not eat. She went back to the hospital, and demanded something be done.
The doctor took an x-ray of her tongue and noticed a lump. He prepared her for minor surgery. When The doctor cut her tongue open, a live cockroach crawled out!!!! There were cockroach eggs on the seal of the Envelope. The egg was able to hatch inside of her tongue, because of her saliva, which was warm and moist... This is a true story reported on CNN!

I used to work for a print shop(32 years ago), and we were told NEVER to lick the envelopes. I never understood why until I had to go into storage and pull out 2500 envelopes that were already printed and saw several squads of cockroaches roaming around inside a couple of boxes with eggs everywhere. They eat the glue on the envelopes.

Tips from Lynn

Hey. my (Lynn's) dishwasher repair guy just left and passed along some interesting advice. When buying dishwasher detergent look for phosphorous amount on the box. Your looking for something around 8.7%. There are a lot new products hitting the market that are "green", and have little to no phosporous. You need this to clean dishes. Don't buy large quantities of det. because it will go bad and not clean a thing. Don't keep the stuff under the sink, could have a leak and the stuff with turn to clumping stuff. Run hot water before you start the machine and the use of good det, makes all the difference.Glad I have a service contract because this visit was $136.00 without it. Lynn

homemade wipesf

Here's how to make homemade wipes....take Bounty Paper Towels (has to be bounty, because all others dissentigrate too easily) and lay it down horizontally on the counter, cut it in half with a kitchen knife (one that you don't mind getting dull). Then take the cardboard tube out by removing the paper towel a little, squishing the end and pulling it out. In a tubberware type container (I use a big empty margarine container), put in two Tablespoons of baby oil, Two Tablespoons of Baby Bath, and Two cups of water. Mix it up and then put in the paper towel. Squish it down in a little to make it fit, then place the lid on and flip it over. Leave upside down for about an hour or two and then turn right side up and your wipes are ready to be pulled out from the inside. We have been using these for about 5 years now. Love them!

After a day of contemplation and soul searching, I have decided to reach out to my friends and relatives and ask you to do something that has been troubling me for a long time.
Our nation is/has been on the slippery slope for a long time. If you look around you will find corruption, greed, moral decay, and a steady move away from the things that made us great. The principles upon which this nation was founded are no longer our backbone. However, we can reverse this trend.
2 Chron. 7:14 ~ In God's word he states, “If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land."
I am convinced that we must pray for our nation and its leaders and ask for forgiveness. So I ask you to join me in this plea to our Lord.
Would you please send this to people in your address book (send it to all of them); ask them to pray EVERYDAY.(25 to the 5th power is 9,765,625 people.) IMAGINE if each person reaches TEN others...or all TWENTY FIVE!
If you do and they comply, we will lift up millions and millions of prayers a day to our Creator. He will hear us and in faith will answer.

Killed in action the week before, the body of Sergeant First Class John C. Beale was returned to Falcon Field in Peachtree City, Georgia, just south of Atlanta, on June 11, 2009. The Henry County Police Department escorted the procession to the funeral home in McDonough, Georgia. A simple notice in local papers indicated the road route to be taken and the approximate time.

Nowadays one can be led to believe that America no longer respects honor and no longer honors sacrifice outside the military. Be it known that there are many places in this land where people still recognize the courage and impact of total self-sacrifice. Georgia remains one of those graceful places. Cloth Diapers

This came at the perfect time! I was actually going to email this to Sue so she could forward it on, but this way is much easier and should take a load off of Sue's shoulders! :P

Also if you'd like to try it out, but aren't a big sewer I'd be willing to make you a few for cost of materials. That way you can try it out and see if you like it with out putting out too much money.

I read a quote today that is so good for young mothers: "When raising young kids, remember: The days are long, but the years are short." so true!
